It sounds a bit bizarre, but oddly the idea of thinking about death everyday was an essential Samurai practice. Discussed in the opening lines of ‘The Code of the Samurai’, this reflective meditation brought about better health, better welfare, a better sense of responsibility, and an improved perspective for living. I think what we are really after, when we boil away all the things that don’t count, is what’s left. Or, perhaps, what won’t diminish with time.
