Kevin, maybe you’re going to laugh at me, but I think you should start doing some writing.
Regardless of what you might say to that, I find myself remembering things you’ve said here and there. In a sense it’s less about that you’ve stumbled on some great and magnificent phrase or turn of words, and more because you’re telling stories.
Years ago, I remember my niece telling me that she really liked stories. She was a grown woman by then. But the thing about her statement was that it was a clue. The clue was: people connect to stories. It’s what we listen to, and it’s what we remember. We can carry them from childhood straight into old age.
And so, after a couple of brief exchanges with you I’m passing that along, for what it’s worth: think about it… tell your stories.
I have some unpublished stuff which is less about the essays I write and far more about my life and growing up. And also about experiences as a young guy, getting older. It’s hard to describe, but there’s something about them that kinda makes me go, “Yeah, me too.” Even though I’m the guy who wrote it! A bit of nostalgia, for sure, but also what could be called insights into life in a Waltons (the TV show) sort of way. Not corny, but both reminiscent and thoughtful. Your story about schools hints at that.
Anyway, just a thought.
